Chapter one

Our Story

We met in April 2021, just as the world was opening back up, for our first date at Bar Charlie in Washington, D.C. What began online quickly became something more. We spent those early months dating our way up and down 14th Street and dancing the nights away at the 9:30 Club and The Anthem. Somewhere between the late-night concerts and slow Sunday mornings, we fell in love. Before long, we were planning our first big adventure together.

Chapter two

Why Lisbon

Just four months after we started dating, we took our first international trip together to Lisbon, Portugal, where Taylor’s best friend Becca was living at the time. One glass of port and we were hooked.

Since then we’ve explored Iceland, London, Thailand, Japan, Colombia, Mexico, and more, but Lisbon always pulls us back.

Its winding tree-lined streets are lined with shimmering tile, sidewalk cafés, and great restaurants. Fado music drifts out of doorways and the people are some of the warmest we’ve met. There’s truly something for everyone. Or at least, plenty of ceramics for Taylor and stinky tinned fish for Carter.

Lisbon is an easy direct flight from D.C., and it has always been our favorite place to slow down and unwind. We couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate with the people we love most.

The Venue

We’ll be celebrating at the Vandelli Botanical Garden, inside the Jardim Botânico da Ajuda, the first botanical garden ever built in Portugal and home to several peacocks who roam the grounds. We chose it for both its beauty and its convenience: it’s a green garden oasis overlooking the Tagus River and the Lisbon skyline and a short ride from both the airport and the city center.

Getting to the garden

From downtown Lisbon

  1. Taxi or Uber (easiest)

About 10–15 minutes from Praça do Comércio, depending on traffic. You’ll head west along the river toward Belém, then up the hill into Ajuda. Ask for the Calçada do Galvão entrance.

  2. Tram 18

Board at Cais do Sodré; it stops a short walk from the garden.

  3. Bus 760

From Praça da Figueira to Ajuda Palace, across the road from the garden. About 30 minutes.

Travel & Stay

Getting there

Fly into Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS). The venue is in the Ajuda neighborhood, a short taxi or rideshare from the airport and central Lisbon.

Where to stay

Any hotel or Airbnb in central Lisbon will be a short 10–15 minute ride to the venue. We’ll share our recommended hotels here soon.

Getting around

Uber is the easiest way we’ve found to get around Lisbon. If you’re exploring the historic center, a tuk-tuk is a fun way to tackle the hills. Just bring cash.

Book early

October is a popular time to visit Lisbon, so we recommend booking flights and lodging as soon as your plans allow.

Good to know

Questions & Answers

Are kids invited?

We love your little ones, but this will be an adults-only celebration.

Can I bring a guest?

We’re keeping our celebration small, so we’re only able to offer plus-ones on a limited basis. Your invitation will list everyone included.

What should I wear?

Formal attire: suits and ties, or formal dresses. The ceremony is in the garden, so choose shoes that can handle paths and lawn. Bright colors encouraged! It’s a party after all.

What will the weather be like?

Mid-October in Lisbon is usually mild, with days in the 70s and evenings that cool to around 60°F. Bring an extra layer for the evening. After the ceremony we’ll move into the greenhouse, and the afterparty is on an indoor dance floor close by.

Can I take photos during the ceremony?

We’re having an unplugged ceremony, so please keep phones and cameras tucked away while we say “I do.” Our photographer will capture every moment, and we’ll share the photos with you afterward.

Do I need a visa?

U.S. citizens don’t need a visa for short visits to Portugal. Your passport should be valid for at least three months past your departure from Europe and issued within the last 10 years. The EU is also rolling out ETIAS, a quick online travel authorization for visa-free visitors, which is expected to be required by the time of the wedding. We’ll post a reminder as the date gets closer. Guests from other countries should check entry requirements ahead of time.
